Meet Matte Magic

China Glaze Emerald Sparkle alone and with Matte Magic topcoat

I know a lot of people have been having a hard time finding Essie Matte About You.

China Glaze Matte Magic is a less expensive version, in a cute  mini bottle,

that gives the same matte effect on nails as Essie Matte About You.

China Glaze Matte Magic is available now at Sally’s Beauty.

Really? Oh I looove it. It doubles your polish collection because it just completely transforms everything and gives it a different look. The matte look is still so chic and edgy to me. I especially love mattifying shimmer polishes to get that suede look :)

I havnt tried it on shimmer polishes yet but I will now hopefully I can get back on the matte wagon

    Matte is whack. lol
Its too hyped. after awhile your normal mani pedicure gets dingy & its like u purposely made em Matte. LOL.
I do agree that Matte is edgy and different. but after a while… its just “eh”

Lol! I do find that I don’t like matte finish on my toes. Doesn’t quite do it for me. But still loving it on my fingertips :)

I love the look but I’m finding it’s not nearly as long lasting as a typical top coat. I put it over 1 layer of OPI base coats and 3 layers of OPI’s Vodka and Cavier. It applied nicely and dried quickly but a few nails got these strange white lines throughout and after two days of normal wear and tear, it started chipping. My nails aren’t the greatest and do tend to chip, but usually not that quickly. Is anybody else finding issues with Matte Magic’s durability?
Also, I have to disagree with Sarah. The Matte look from Matte Magic is totally different from the matte look of an aged manicure, at least if you but it over a good color and apply it right.

    Hi Katie!
Absolutely, matte finish does not last longer than a few days. I have found this to be true with actual matte polishes (Man Glaze) and also using Essie Matte about You top coat. I just got Matte Magic but I’m assuming it will be a similar experience. Companies have been pretty up front that matte is not long lasting and your handsoap, lotion, oils, etc can affect the finish.
I also disagree that matte polish looks like an aged manicure. I think she was just being silly ;)

Oh and I’m not positive but I think with matte polish you are not supposed to use a base coat. Just apply your polish (however many coats you need) and then apply one thin coat of matte magic on top.

I was wondering about that. I went with a matte top coat as opposed to the matte colors because I read about how badly they chipped (as anything would with out a base and top coat!) but I figured base coat wouldn’t matter with a matte top coat. I mean, I can’t imagine how it would matter…

It’s unfortunate about the durability, though. I bet they’ll be able to develop a longer lasting matte top coat if the trend stick around long enough for that to happen (which is probably won’t)

Ha. And I’m sure Sarah was just being silly. I guess I just got defensive about the look because I love it. I’ve been wanting matte nail polishes for SOOO long. I even tried a few techniques to make normal nail polish look matte (with varying degrees of success…) and I found a couple off-brands with dark colors that would dry matte but the durability, of course, was crap and the application sucked.

Needless to say I was SO psyched when I learned that matte was all the rage (good AND bad rage) this fall.

Do you have any idea why a basecoat would effect a matte top coat? (I can see how it might effect a matte color polish)

Oh yeah. Lastly, this might be silly, but I’ve had ton’s of success with ‘buffing’ oils and lotions off to return the finish to it’s full matte glory. Or at least nearly to it’s original matte glory. Just use the sleeve of an old sweatshirt or something and rub lightly.

I’m not sure either, I just remember reading that somewhere. I actually never use a base coat :/

I’m not sure if companies will really try to make a long lasting matte top coat. The only purpose the matte top coat has is to flatten the finish of the polish. It definitely doesn’t claim to prolong the life of the polish, in fact it probably cuts it in half. But it doesn’t bother me much to change my polish often. Plus matte top coat dries so quickly :)

Thanks for the buffing tip :D

The dry time of matte polish versus the dry time of most basecoats is the issue.

Since the matte polish dries SO quickly, it can dry faster than the basecoat, resulting in a crinkly, wrinkly finish when the matte has dried on top of a basecoat that was still wet.

It can be totally avoided by allowing a longer dry time for each coat.

This could also become an issue with the matte topcoat, if it is placed over a wet polish, in the same manner that a fast-dry topcoat is usually applied. I have found that by applying a fast-dry topcoat first, the matte can dry as fast as it wants to, it won’t out-dry Poshe/Seche…

    HTH! =D

OHH THAT MATTE LOOKS LIKE IT WORKS MAGIC!

  17. KatieNo Gravatar said on December 10th, 2009 at 12:41 pm:

Thanks wixbetty. I’m pretty good about allowing absurdly long dry times between coats, but I did fall victim to the crinkly, wrinkly thing with the matte top coat once and I was wondering what caused it.

So after having the product for a while, I’ve just settled with applying it over my normal (glossy) top coat about 4 or 5 days after I paint my nails (or whenever the gloss starts to get dull and dinged up.) Then I get a couple more days out of the color before the matte starts losing its finish and then I start over with a new color. It works for me because I’m hard on my nails and my manicures don’t last long, but exposing them to remover (even non-acetone) every few days doesn’t really help anything either. I just use MatteMagic as a kind of refresher.

And I second Shew in asking if they have it. I found mine and Sally and it was in a totally bizarre place… like NOT with ALL the rest of the nail care products.
