Awhile back, we received an email from a reader who asked us how to survive a job interview. Nothing is more nerve wracking than sitting in front of a total stranger trying to sell yourself to them. It’s humbling and definitely not easy. In fact, it can turn into a full fledged fiasco if not properly planned. The very first job I applied for (in retail), required me having to role play and “sell” a pen the manager was holding. It was awkward and scary, but I ended up getting the job because I anticipated every scenario and nailed it! Landing your dream job involves a strategized plan of attack. BE ready so you don’t have to GET ready.
Research the company and position you’ll be applying for. The number one question I ask potential employees is: WHY are you interested in working for this particular spa? The most impressive answers are always carefully worded and researched. I once had a lady explain: “I have no clue about your spa, I just need a job”. Although I appreciated the honesty, I didn’t hire her because I felt it was just a sloppy answer, plain and simple.
Hair, makeup, and wardrobe is crucial; especially when you’re trying for a job in the fashion or beauty industry. This may be a bit confusing, but what YOU consider to be “fashionable”, may be inappropriate to the interviewer. Remember that dressing sexy and dressing fashion forward are worlds apart. When you’re interviewing, basic pieces win versus best-selling, Bebe/Kardashian get ups. Employers don’t know you yet and are only trying to get a feel for how you’ll fit in their workplace. Consider that for makeup application as well. Leave your smokey eye/nude, glossy lip combo at the club. No shimmer powders and god forbid- GLITTER. No shorts. Close-toed shoes and covered tattoos are a must-even during the Summer months. Not because you you have ugly ink or toes, but because companies (in the fashion world too) are concerned with professionalism FIRST AND FOREMOST. When you’ve actually landed the job is when you can flaunt your flair.
The Handshake. It’s true that a handshake (from women as well) should be firm and paired with unwavering eye contact. You’re not a delicate flower whose hand must be kissed and caressed. You’re a warrior in the workforce. Man up.
Keep Calm. Carry On. REALLY think before blurting out your answers. Be able to enunciate, project your voice, and speak slowly. Try not to make too many hand gestures. Don’t use slang or talk negatively about past employers (duh). Remember to breathe.
DO NOT name drop. It’s fine if your best friend is the CEO of the company; good for you. But no one likes a show pony. At least I don’t. I personally don’t care if you’re bff’s with god himself, so long as you can do a Brazilian wax in under 10 min.
More often than not, employers will ask what your strengths and weaknesses are. While it’s fine to toot your own horn once in awhile, stating that you feel you don’t have ANY weaknesses is unrealistic and cocky. Be honest. The employer is only asking to make sure you’re placed in the right department, under the proper management.
The words teamwork, camaraderie, and honesty will 9 times out 10 impress an employer.
It’s OK to mention a few of your interests and extracurricular activities, but be modest about it. For example, if you’re an aspiring rapper, do the employer a favor and refrain from asking them to listen to your demo. There’s a time and place for everything, and this is neither the time NOR place.
Be you. If you hype yourself up too much during the interview and fail to execute, your facade won’t last long. The most important thing is to allow the employer to see your TRUE self shine. Let your hard work speak for itself! Good luck and get to work!

Back in the glittery disco days of Studio 54, Way Bandy became the world’s first “CELEBRITY” makeup artist. Teaming up with the era’s IT pack (which included photog, Francesco Scavullo and his fallen muse, Gia Carangi), Bandy and his crew simply defined the decade. With his two best selling books, Designing Your Face and Styling Your Face, Bandy revolutionized makeup techniques, ultimately paving the way for MU icons such as Kevyn Aucoin and Mally Roncal.

With October being the month we raise awareness for our boobies, November is the time to celebrate MOVEMBER: The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember. Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days. FF has a little something in the works to show you how WE celebrated this men’s awareness month
To find out how YOU can help with the cause, visit Movember’s website HERE.

I love love LOVE makeup bags, but I’ve never been able to find one that suits my needs PERFECTLY- most of them are too girly, too boring, or don’t function properly. My problems are solved with Charlotte Ronson’s “Lolita” bag. The clutch boasts “a black lace overlay, black patent leather piping, and plenty of secret pockets for girls that love to organize.” Even better, the bag is loaded with samples provided by everyone from Urban Decay, Stila, L’Occitane and more. PERFECT for travel or a last minute gift, there’s something for everyone in there. Available FREE with any $100 purchase (or more) on Beauty.com.

Who doesn’t love a MESTIZA? Phoebe Cates (of Russian, Chinese, and Filipino heritage) launched a thousand boners, I mean ships, with her exotic looks and red bikini in 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

Here’s a closer look at the lipstick that will be offered with the rest of the Lanvin for H&M goodies. Shades range from a “Parisian inspired” scarlet, to Bordeaux, to hot pink and “Old Rose” (wtf does THAT even look like??) and will retail for $9.95. Good AFFORDABLE idea for those that might not want to spend on the entire collection.
